A rustic-yet-refined retreat surrounded by hundreds of acres of vineyards

Located at the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley, Calistoga offers an easygoing, relaxed vibe. The town’s mineral-rich waters and natural geothermal hot spring pools add to its lure as a premier wine destination.

Calistoga remains home to a number of spas, where visitors can soak it all in at long-time favorites like Calistoga Spa Hot Springs and Dr. Wilkinson’s Hot Springs Resort.

Lincoln Avenue, Calistoga’s main drag, is lined with shops, tasting rooms, and eateries. Each December, Lincoln Avenue hosts the Calistoga Lighted Tractor Parade. Plan ahead and join the locals for this festive, down-home event.

Once you get to Calistoga...

Relax with a thermal water mud bath at Indian Springs Spa, then keep the chill vibes going with an alfresco lunch at Solbar. Ready for wine? Book a tasting at the 1882 Chateau Montelena, in a stone castle at the base of St. Helena mountain. Where to stay? The five-room Francis House was built in 1886 in French Second Empire architecture (Architectural Digest named it one of the world’s 15 best-designed hotels).

A little Calistoga history

In the 1860s, Sam Brannan, the leader of the permanent American settlers to arrive, developed a spa similar to one in Saratoga, New York. The town was later named Calistoga, after Brannan's tipsy proclamation that he would make this area the Saratoga of California — which came out as the "Calistoga of Sarafornia." When Brannan's vision of building a railroad was realized, Calistoga became a summer retreat for San Franciscans.
