“For 30 years, I have committed to showing up at a studio to paint or print-make. During these three decades, through trial and error, I have learned three simple rules to assist me with this artistic calling: firstly, I remind myself to have gratitude for the space and time to create. Secondly, hard work, which includes success and failures, is mandatory and more important than raw talent. Lastly, loneliness, and the isolating process of creating - which can define a struggling artist- must be reframed as solitude; the ego must be left outside the studio door to promote the essence of pure imagination.

This latest compilation of work evolves from the need for me to stand still. The solid earth, terra firma, grounds me as I observe skies and water in constant motion. These images, supported by strong feelings and unconscious urges, make their way to my studio where I am inspired to slowly, methodically paint the earth. In contrast, I mix and apply paint for the skies (and water) frenetically and directly onto the canvas. The sky is a metaphor for me to keep evolving artistically. The earth symbolizes a new discovery: to be still, quiet and focused.

As I experiment with mixing and applying paint, collect images while moving and remaining still, I am not always clear about what I am doing. What I am clear about is having faith in the hard work which lead to the discovery of these images.”

Penhall has exhibited annually since 1995. His work can be found in numerous private, corporate and public collections in the United States and in Canada, including the University of British Columbia, West Vancouver Art Museum, among many more.
