Caldwell Snyder Gallery will host an opening reception for Marta Penter with paintings from her most recent exhibition, on Saturday, October 6th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at our St. Helena gallery, with wine generously provided by Castellucci Napa Valley. Exhibition continues through October 31st.

Penter draws from her background in psychology to meticulously catalogue the countless social cues of dress, hairstyle, posture, and facial expression that allow us to negotiate the realm of others while carving out space for our own experience. Her work suggests a dream-like reality, yet her expert realism, the virtuosity with which she renders the human body in all its attitudes, gives her paintings the authority and immediacy of photographs.

Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1957, Marta Penter’s acutely observed, intimate paintings occupy social space—cafes, sidewalks, subway stations—while simultaneously inhabiting private, unique inner worlds. She's photographed streets across the globe, intuitively seeking out moments of silence. “What do I shoot?” she writes. “Silence itself. Because people may be there, all of them occupying the same place, but each one of them is within his or her own private and silent universe.”

Marta’s latest works are middle-sized canvases with great impact. Her subjects are the well-groomed bodies of "the beautiful people." She bathes the perfect youthfulness of cover girls in antiseptic splendor. There is a sovereign power in the unapproachable beauty of these perfect women in their perfect swimsuits, as they rule over a void. Bodies from the most diverse regions of the globe – from Brazil to Vietnam – transfixed in images as they hover on pink or apple green floaters, immersed in leisure of metaphysical proportions.
