Napa ARTwalk: An Urban Outdoor Museum
July 21, 2015
Want to get a hit of contemporary culture while you’re visiting Napa, but eager to spend some more time outdoors? Or are you an art-lover with kids who can’t talk the younger ones into spending an hour in a museum? Or do you just have a taste for unexpected sightings of fantastic sculptures? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, you definitely need to check out Napa’s new ARTwalk, which just launched its newest two-year exhibition on June 18.
The 14 new installations, which take you on a walking tour through downtown Napa, represent an eclectic assortment of colorful modern sculptures. They were chosen from a juried selection of submissions from professional artists working in the Napa area and from all over the Western United States. Launched in 2009, the ARTwalk is in its fourth exhibition and has earned national attention through such media as 7×7 Magazine, The Washington Post, and Sunset Magazine. Top Events USA credits the Napa ARTwalk for “establishing Napa… as a cultural destination.”
You can pick up a new walking-tour guide at the Napa Valley Welcome Center on 600 Main Street, or download it by visiting www.napaartwalk.org. The brochure includes a map of artwork locations, information about the artists, and links to the program’s audio tour, enabling self-guided viewing of the exhibition from sunrise to sunset.
You can also check out the new Napa ARTwalk audio tour on a free smartphone app (for both iOS and Android) made specifically for walking tours. Just download Otocast and look up “Napa Artwalk,” then select which sculpture you’d like to hear about. Most descriptions have been recorded by the artists themselves.
During the 24 months that the art works remain on view, visitors are encouraged to vote to select one piece for a People’s Choice Award. The annual winner of the award will receive a complimentary two-night getaway in Napa. Vote for your favorite sculpture online at www.napaartwalk.org.
